The venue was Protea Hotel Furstenhof as the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) met with industry and Government representatives to initiate a process of consultations in the field of buildings construction regulations.
The objective of the meeting was to bring together regulators and industry representatives to study existing practices in the implementation of building construction regulations and to propose improvements.
“This will in turn strengthen Namibia’s national quality infrastructure and support Namibian regulators in their duty and protect human, animal, plant, and environmental health and safety.” Said Riundja Ali Kaakunga (Othy), NSI CEO, in his opening remarks at the event.
“The NSI believes that it is important for stakeholders to agree on a coordinated strategy on the regulations on building construction, cement and concrete technology.”
Some of the main suggestions raised was the need for a detailed nationwide study to analyse the current regulatory and industry practices and propose a way forward. The gathering unanimously agreed that there is a need first of all for an enabling Act of Parliament under which the regulations shall resort.
Meanwhile, the NSI has appointed Professor Karl-Heinz Bosman of Senior Experten services to research, coordinate and eventually compile a report which will be submitted to Cabinet for consideration.
